The Philippines Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers against taking the anti-impotence drug Viagra after it was found to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke in men and women over 40.
The drug’s maker, Sanofi, has warned that the drug could increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes by more than 80 per cent, according to the FDA.
The agency said the drug is intended to “enhance the effects of menopause and women’s health by treating the symptoms of menopause” and “protect the sexual lives of men and women”.
The FDA said it is “reviewing the use of Viagra for menopausal women” as the drug may cause a potentially fatal side effect, which in women is called ovarian cysts. The agency said the drug has been linked to increased risk of ovarian cancer, breast cancer, and endometrial cancer, among other cancers.
The FDA also said the drug is linked to an increased risk of strokes, heart attacks and blood clots.
“We are advising consumers to exercise caution and to consult their healthcare provider before taking any drugs for erectile dysfunction,” Sanofi said in a statement.
In a statement, Sanofi said the FDA has received multiple reports of menopausal women taking Viagra and a study showed the drug may increase the risk of developing hormone-related cancers, such as breast cancer and endometrial hyperplasia.
“This is concerning for women, as it is a very serious condition that requires immediate medical attention, and the FDA should carefully evaluate any reports of menopausal symptoms or changes in hormone levels,” the statement said.
Viagra has been prescribed to more than 1.6 million menopausal women worldwide, with the drug being approved for use in about 6 million of these women. In some countries, it is also prescribed to help with other conditions.
The FDA said the drug is not indicated for use in the treatment of an enlarged prostate or high blood pressure, as the risk of developing these conditions increases with age.
It added that the drug is not approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, as its effects on blood vessels can also be worsened by an increased risk of stroke and heart attack.
The agency also said it is “reviewing the use of Viagra for menopausal women” as the drug may increase the risk of developing ovarian cancer, breast cancer and endometrial cancer, among other cancers, and may increase the risk of endometrial cancer.

The agency said Viagra has been associated with an increased risk of stroke in women, stroke in men, heart attacks and cardiovascular events.
The FDA said there is “no specific evidence” that Viagra increases the risk of heart attacks or cardiovascular disease.
A study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine in December found a statistically significant increase in the risk of heart attacks and strokes in the women taking Viagra, compared to those who had not.
The FDA said there is no “specific evidence” that Viagra increases the risk of heart attacks or cardiovascular disease. It added that the study did not “serve as definitive proof” that Viagra increases the risk of heart attacks or cardiovascular disease.
“The FDA is concerned that the risk of stroke or heart attack is highest in older women who are at increased risk of stroke and heart disease,” the agency said in its statement.

A federal judge has ordered a three-year investigation into the online sale of a counterfeit Viagra prescription from a company known as "The Viagra Company".
The U. S. District Court in New York has ordered the company, which is based in Niagara Falls, to pay $2.5 million in criminal penalties and forfeiture and $1 million in fines and forfeiture of $3 million.
The company, which sells its own drugs for the same price, sells the drug through different channels: from online pharmacies to brick-and-mortar stores. The website that sells Viagra for $10,000 to $15,000 a day, which is sold in bulk. It is estimated that at least 40 percent of Americans suffer from erectile dysfunction.
A judge in the case, William F. Rector of New York State Medical Center, ordered the company to pay a total of $2.2 million in criminal fines and forfeiture. He said the company "has a tendency to sell counterfeit drugs through the Internet, where consumers are forced to purchase a large amount of the drug."
The judge said it would be difficult for the company to distinguish between the online drug sale of Viagra and other products sold in the market. The judge said the company has a "large number of illegitimate websites selling counterfeit drugs that have a significant risk of abuse."
The case was filed by U. District Judge John C. LeMay in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
